Africa Unites for Red Saturday — African Nations Join Forces to Save Lives on Saturday, 29 November 2025. One day. One continent. One purpose. The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) and the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) will join blood services across Africa for this ground-breaking blood donation event, aiming to engage thousands of donors across five nations to collect lifesaving donations to support hospitals and patients.
Red Saturday represents African unity and solidarity, a collective effort to address blood shortages, celebrating the lifesaving power of voluntary blood donation.
Key messages:
- Voluntary blood donation saves lives.
- New donors are urgently needed.
- Blood is needed daily, not just in emergencies.
Participating Nations: South Africa, Namibia, Ghana, Ethiopia, and Tanzania.
The Western Cape operates a separate blood service due to a decision made in 2001 when seven independent blood centres merged, while the Western Cape chose to remain independent. SANBS collaborates closely with WCBS, especially during campaigns like Red Saturday.
Both regular and new donors are encouraged to donate blood. If you can’t donate, you can still help by spreading the word on social media and sharing information with your community.
Share a photo of your donation on social media and tag using #RedSaturday and Mall To Action. Follow on: Facebook: @SANBS, Instagram: @thesanbs, Twitter: @theSANBS, TikTok: @thesanbs, YouTube: @Officialsanbs. Be a hero. Give blood. Give hope.
Blood drives are taking place at malls across South Africa. Visit SANBS Mall to Action for a full list of participating malls and details.
Blood drives will be held from 09:00 to 16:00 on 29 November 2025.
If you’re not near a participating mall, contact us with your location and we will direct you to the nearest fixed or mobile blood donation site.
All donations made on #RedSaturday, whether at malls or other sites, will count towards the total goal of 5,000 units.
Some areas may not be included due to logistical reasons or existing blood drives, but regular drives and fixed donation sites will still operate during the event.
The 5,000 unit target applies to participating malls but donations at all locations are encouraged and count towards saving lives.
Donors must be 16-75 years old, weigh at least 50 kg, be in good health, and lead a low-risk lifestyle.
Organise a blood drive!
Help SANBS recruit new blood donors by organising a blood drive in your community,
office, school, college, church, or residential complex.
